Tik or Tok? Is TikTok secure enough?

January 8, 2020

Researchers: Alon Boxiner, Eran Vaknin, Alexey Volodin, Dikla Barda, Roman Zaikin

December 2019

Available in over 150 markets, used in 75 languages globally, and with over 1 billion users, TikTok has definitely cracked the code to the term “popularity” across the globe. As of October 2019, TikTok is one of the world’s most downloaded apps.

The application is mainly used by teenagers and kids that are using this app to create short music clips, mostly lip-sync clips of 3 to 15 seconds, and short looping videos of 3 to 60 seconds. The application allows the youth to share, save and keep private (and sometimes very sensitive) videos of themselves and their loved ones.

In the last few months we have seen evidence of the potential risks embedded within the TikTok application, and this has been acknowledged as well by others in the industry. According to USA Today, the US Navy banned the use of the application for its personnel, while in an article by The Guardian, Senior Democrat Chuck Schumer says that the “TikTok app poses potential national security risk”. In addition, the New York Times has published that TikTok is under national security review. Most recently, CNet.com reported that the US Army banned TikTok from use on government phones, reversing its policy on the entertainment app, which it recently used as a recruiting tool.

In the recent months, Check Point Research teams discovered multiple vulnerabilities within the TikTok application. The vulnerabilities described in this research allow attackers to do the following:

  • Get a hold of TikTok accounts and manipulate their content
  • Delete videos
  • Upload unauthorized videos
  • Make private “hidden” videos public
  • Reveal personal information saved on the account such as private email addresses

Check Point Research informed TikTok developers about the vulnerabilities exposed in this research and a solution was responsibly deployed to ensure its users can safely continue using the TikTok app.

Demo video of the attack:

Technical Details

SMS Link Spoofing

During our research we found that it is possible to send a SMS message to any phone number on behalf of TikTok.

On TikTok’s main site: www.tiktok.com, there is a functionality that lets users send an SMS message to themselves in order to download the application:

Attackers that wish to send a SMS message to a victim can capture the HTTP request using a proxy tool (such as Burp Suite). The Mobile parameter contains the phone number to which the SMS will be sent to and the download_url parameter is the link that will appear in the SMS message:

Legitimate SMS message:

Changing the download_url parameter will result in a spoofed SMS message that will contain the link the attacker chooses to type.

The following screenshot demonstrates a spoofed SMS message containing a malicious link. For demonstration purposes we used the following link – https://attacker.com:

Spoofed SMS message containing https://attacker.com link:

Deep links enable attackers’ intents

While reverse engineering the TikTok app on an Android mobile, we found that it has a “deep links” functionality, making it possible to invoke intents in the app via a browser link.

The intents that the application listens to are the “https://m.tiktok.com” schema and “musically://” custom schema:

Attackers using the vulnerability can send a custom link that contains the schemas mentioned above. Since the custom link will contain the “url” parameter, the mobile application will open a webview (browser) window and go to the webpage written in the parameter from the mobile application. Any request will be sent with the users’ cookies.

For demonstration purposes, we used the following link:

The following screenshot demonstrates the parsing of the deep link:

The mobile application opens a web view (browser) window and goes to http://10.10.10.113:8000 – a web server controlled by the attacker –

making it possible for attackers to send requests on behalf of the user.

Open redirection with domain regex bypass

In the course of our research, we found that it is possible to send a malicious link to a victim that will result in redirecting the victim to a malicious website. The redirection opens the possibility of accomplishing , and Sensitive Data Exposure attacks without user consent.

The redirection occurs when an attacker sends a legitimate login link derived from Tiktok’s domain: https://login.tiktok.com.

We found that the login request can contain a HTTP GET parameter redirect_url, an example to a login request that will redirect the user after a successful login attempt –

The redirection parameter will redirect the victim to tiktok’s domain web pages according to the following validation regex (client side only):

The redirection process was found to be vulnerable since the validation regex is not validating the value of the redirect_url parameter properly. Rather, the regex validates the parameter value ending with tiktok.com. making it possible to perform a redirection to anything with tiktok.com.

For demonstration purposes, an attacker can redirect users to the http://www.attacker-tiktok.com website and perform further attacks as mentioned above.

Cross-Site Scripting (XSS)

As our research continued, we found that Tiktok’s subdomain https://ads.tiktok.com is vulnerable to XSS attacks, a type of attack in which malicious scripts are injected into otherwise benign and trusted websites.

The ads subdomain contains a help center where you can find information on how to create and publish ads in Tiktok. The help center, available at https://ads.tiktok.com/help/, contains a search vulnerability.

The injection point of the XSS attack was found in the search functionality. When an attacker tries to perform a search, an HTTP GET request is performed to the web application server with a q parameter and the searched string as its value.

The following screenshot shows a legitimate search performed by the attacker, searching for the word “pwned”:

The attacker tries to inject JavaScript code into the q parameter (the injected value is URL encoded).

For the purpose of demonstration, we have popped an alert window with the content “xss”:

Attacker Takeover : Performing Actions on Behalf of the User

Cross-site Request Forgery (CSRF)

At this point, we had two different flows that we could execute JavaScript code on behalf of any victim that clicked the link we sent (as explained in ) – XSS and open redirection (redirecting the user to a malicious website that will execute JavaScript code and make requests to Tiktok with the victims’ cookies).

With the lack of anti-Cross-Site request forgery mechanism, we realized that we could execute JavaScript code and perform actions on behalf of the victim, without his/her consent.

Deleting video

Deleting a video can be made via HTTP GET request to https://api-t.tiktok.com/aweme/v1/aweme/delete/?aweme_id=video_id

Using JavaScript execution as mentioned above, we could send the HTTP GET request with the desired aweme_id (video id) of the video the attacker wishes to delete.

The following screenshot demonstrates a request deletion of video id 6755373615039991045:

The webserver response indicating that the video was deleted successfully:

Create video

In order to create a video on the victim’s feed, the attacker first has to send a request to create a video on his own feed. Video creation requests generate a new video id. At this point the attacker copies the video creation request and drops it.

Second, using JavaScript execution as mentioned above, the attacker posts the video creation request he copied and sends the HTTP POST request on behalf of the victim.

The following screenshot demonstrates a creation request of a video on the victims’ feed:

The server response indicates that the video was successfully created:

Become a follower

Attackers looking to become a follower of a victim’s account sends a request to the victim and the victim has to approve the request.

In order to approve the follower’s request, the attacker uses the JavaScript execution methods described above and sends an approval request on behalf of the victim.

The approval request is sent and an HTTP POST request to the following path:

The POST request has a parameter, from_user_id, which contains the user id that wishes to be a follower.
The attacker changes the value of from_user_id parameter to his own id and sends the request to TikToks’ server:

At this point, the attacker becomes the victims’ follower:

Change a private video to a public video

In order to change a video from private mode to public mode, the attacker has to retrieve the video id.
Retrieving the video id is possible while the attacker is a follower of the victim as explained above.

Once the attacker has a video id of a private video, he/she can change the video privacy settings by sending a HTTP GET request on behalf of the user (using the JavaScript execution as written above):

Please note that with “type=1” the requested video will be changed to public mode while “type=2” will cause a video to turn private.

The following screenshot demonstrates a HTTP GET request to change video id 6755813399445261573 from private mode to public mode:

The server response indicates that the video turned into public:

Sensitive Data Exposure

As our research continued, we learned we could execute JavaScript code using XSS or other methods mentioned to retrieve sensitive information. We found several API calls in https://api-t.tiktok.com and https://api-m.tiktok.com subdomains.

Making requests to the above-mentioned APIs will reveal sensitive information about the user including email address, payment information, birthdates and much more.

While trying to use the JavaScript execution vulnerabilities written above, we encountered an issue – Cross Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) mechanism and Same Origin Policy (SOP) security restrictions.

It seems that the API subdomains will allow only certain origins to make the request (for example: www.tiktok.com). For example, the following screenshot demonstrates an API request that was originated from https://cpr.checkpoint.com:

The response was blocked due to the security restrictions:

So we had to somehow bypass CORS and SOP security mechanisms in order to retrieve all the sensitive information that was lying out there.

We found out that Tiktok had implemented an unconventional JSONP callback that provides a method to request data from API servers without CORS and SOP restrictions!
Bypassing those security mechanisms allowed us to steal all the sensitive information of the victims by triggering an AJAX request to the JSONP callback, resulting in JSON data wrapped by JavaScript function.

The following screenshot demonstrates an AJAX request to retrieve all the sensitive information related to the victims’ wallet. The request contains callback parameter and its’ value is the JavaScript function that will be executed (myCallBackMethod):

The next screenshot demonstrates the data containing all the sensitive information that is being retrieved from the API. The sensitive data is infiltrated and could be sent to the attackers’ server:

Conclusion

TikTok videos are entertaining. They’ve created a major trend, a style, even a musical genre. Many of us use the TikTok app to share enjoyable moments and snip bits of fun memories in the form of a short video clips. But as some have experienced, there is often a fine line between fun clips to private, even intimate assets being compromised while trusting to be under the protection from the apps we use.

The research presented here shows the risks associated with one of the most popular and widely used social apps in the world. Such risks enforce the essential need for privacy and data security in the cyber world we live in. Data breaches are becoming an epidemic. This is a lethal problem that many organizations face globally simply because data is pervasive and all around us. Our data is stored across a number of networks and within it our most valuable, private information. It’s our joint responsibility to keep our data safe from compromise.

OK boomer — middle-aged adults are gaining millions of followers on TikTok, proving the app isn’t just for Gen Z

  • Tik Tok celebrity isn’t only for Gen Z. Baby boomers, Gen Y, and other adult creators are making it big on the app.
  • Adult celebrities on Tik Tok keep up with the latest dance trends, offer mental health advice, or create wacky videos that fit the app’s sense of humor.
  • Younger viewers say these older creators offer positive role models and are popular because they don’t try too hard to fit in, or be something they’re not.
  • Visit Insider’s homepage for more stories.

The viral phrase «OK boomer,» which has been widely used to suggest a generational divide and antagonism between Baby Boomers and Gen Z, was popularized on the app TikTok. That may lead some to believe that TikTok is the exclusive haven of angsty teens, but in actuality, it’s not hard to find average middle-aged adults who have amassed millions of followers on the app.

Tim McNeely, 46, is a dentist with a knack for making patients comfortable. While he sometimes tells jokes or dances to calm clients down, he never expected to be famous for his moves.

McNeely has never taken a dance class or had formal training, but he’s amassed 1.5 million followers on TikTok. He films videos with trending dance moves like «the whoa» and includes tricks with his hat or his backpack. With young people at least, he might be one of the most famous dancers in the country, although it didn’t come naturally at first.

Most media reports about «OK boomer» claim young people and adults are experiencing a divisive generational gap, but that isn’t the whole truth. Young people are happy to welcome adults into their online spaces — as long as they know where they fit in.

Some, like Vermin Supreme, take a more avant-garde approach. Supreme, 58, falls squarely into the baby boomer category and has run for president using platforms like zombie preparedness and mandatory tooth-brushing. Supreme told Insider he felt the app was summoning him after he found out he’d gone viral on TikTok before even joining, so he capitalized on the moment and started an account which now has just under 100,000 followers.

One of Supreme’s first videos asked viewers what they would name their pony, and how many legs it should have. Giving ponies away is one of Supreme’s campaign platforms, and the videos were a hit. The first pony video has just under 500,000 views and 91,000 likes. Most of the comments are positive, like one commenter who wants to name their pony after Supreme because they admire him. Many more said they want to vote for Supreme in the upcoming election.

Supreme said Tik Tok has been the most positive platform he’s used, while other corners of the internet have been less welcoming. His success on the app wasn’t expected, but Supreme said his approach appeals to teens who don’t conform or feel they fit in.

«A lot of kids are weird, or non-conformists, and I give them a beacon of hope,» Supreme said. «They don’t have to be boring adults.»

Supreme’s wacky videos meld well with millennial and Gen Z humor, which favors the absurd and has found a home on TikTok.

The McFarlands, a family from Louisville, KY with nearly 600,000 followers, have also harnessed the power of absurdity. Dad Dan, mom Kathy, and their two sons, Dylan and Colin, regularly take trends on the app and add their own twist, filming together in their family home.

A recent video features Dan McFarland asking his sons to watch him practice a «really big presentation,» which turns out to be a collection of what might kindly be described as interpretive dance moves to Lady Gaga’s «Applause,» while flashing the kitchen lights. It’s a great example of the family’s sense of humor, and they get comments like «My favorite group on this app. Thank you so much for the great content!»

@the.mcfarlands

Dylan and Colin McFarland both say their success has changed their family’s life. The two brothers monetized the account in various ways, set up their own LLC and are beginning TikTok consulting for local brands.

«The platform has showed us that it’s possible. We’re the ones informing people of what’s happening,» Colin McFarland told Insider. «It’s given us a platform.»

Each of the creators seem to understand that platform, and the opportunity it has given them. Supreme said his newfound fame on the app may help him clinch the Independent party’s presidential nomination, and McNeely said he’s also received brand deals from luxury retailers and found ways to increase his income.

Authenticity is key to gaining the trust of Gen Z

These creators’ lives have been changed by the app, but it couldn’t have happened without a younger audience. Somehow, the main demographic they draw is Gen Z. How did they escape the «OK boomer» label — often applied to younger generations like Gen Y as well — and become so successful?

McNeely said his appeal is being vulnerable in his videos while challenging himself, and he hears from kids his message is connecting.

Young viewers like Christopher Benz, 16, echo these sentiments. Benz told Insider that humor is everything, and the best adult Tik Tok’ers don’t try too hard.

«They don’t try to understand and overuse pop culture,» Benz said. «They just go with the flow. People get a kick out of their wacky hi-jinks.»

Kids are looking for positive role-models on TikTok

Benz said he appreciates seeing educators, members of the military and other adults post videos that entertain and teach, as well as connect an older generation. His favorites are Vermin Supreme and Granny Smith, and he sees them as positive online role models.

Elizabeth Kupferman, a women’s counselor with more than 100,000 followers of her own, takes the idea of connection, role modeling and education on her Tik Tok account, «advancedbxthces,» a step farther. She provides advice on mental health, self-care and healing, and her viewers love it.

@advancedbitches

If it’s a healthy person, they will support your NO. #counselor #help #codependent #dallas #foryou

♬ ICIMY – Phoebe Ryan

Kupferman said she was astonished at her first 10,000 followers, but she isn’t recognized when she goes out, unlike McNeely and the McFarlands. That doesn’t mean her content doesn’t connect — Kupferman said people reach out with questions all the time. Some say her content brightens their day or encourages them to start the journey of self-healing.

«That’s a home run for me,» Kupferman said in an interview with Insider. «I’ve gotten feedback that people have started therapy because of my TikToks.»

Kupferman, 55, receives feedback from viewers that she’s a boomer worth protecting. She’s another example of an older creator who provides something kids want to watch and connect with, and like McNeely, The McFarlands and Vermin Supreme, it’s not hard to imagine the importance of positive role models kids can look up to.

Adult creators are connecting on an emotional level with the teens of Tik Tok. Some dance, and some provide advice about mental health, but the relationship is mutually beneficial. Adults get to express themselves and open the door to new opportunities, and viewers find a little positivity while dealing with the stress of school, a constant news cycle and generally being an awkward teenager.

For at least a little while, adults aren’t boomers at all. They’re just people kids can look up to, in videos only fifteen seconds long.

Watch, create, and share videos online!

Tik Tok is primarily a video-creating and sharing app. The core functionality focuses on lip-sync videos and user-made music videos, which are often limited to 3-15 seconds. You’ll also find plenty of looping videos that are limited to 60 seconds. In order to promote creativity, when you download Tik Tok app, it provides you with a wide range of video editing tools, including effects, filters, and more. These can be used to create fun and interesting videos quickly.

The application comes with direct access to several music options, songs, and sounds. It allows people to create short music videos from anywhere at anytime. Additionally, these sounds and songs can be used for lip-sync recreations. While the Android app focuses more on the creation part, the Windows version lets you discover new content with ease. Moreover, you can use your laptop’s webcam app to create fun videos and share them with friends online.

While using TikTok app on Windows is a great way to stay connected, the usability and performance of all the tools take a minor hit. As compared to the smartphone app, the Windows version is best used as a home companion to your Android or iPhone app. Having said that, it’s still a great choice for the convenience and ease-of-use offered among multimedia apps for Windows.

Easy and hassle-free installation

It’s important to understand that Tik Tok for PCs isn’t a native app. It wasn’t built from scratch to take advantage of high performance and all functionalities. While Tik Tok videos run great on PCs, you need to download and install an emulated version of the popular Android app. Fortunately, it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to accomplish the task.

In order to install Tik Tok on Windows 10, which is the latest operating system from Microsoft, you need to install an Android app emulator. One of the most popular choices is BlueStacks. Once you’ve installed the emulator, you need to download the APK version of Tik Tok. Simply load the APK file into BlueStacks and run the application from there.

BlueStacks is one of the most popular Android emulators, providing PC users with direct access to tablet-like UI. While all the services and functionalities of an app are present in BlueStacks’ environment, you could witness occasional lags and performance issues.

The issues are most obvious while loading or browsing through new online data. With heavier files, the Windows version of Tik Tok download app free can become laggy and sluggish. Luckily, viewing Tik Tok app videos doesn’t cause any problems. As such, it becomes easier to stay connected with friends and explore loads of content being shared by users across the world.

It’s worth mentioning that BlueStacks comes with a built-in mobile studio, which lets you edit, publish, and record your videos. However, certain performance issues may encourage you to undertake these tasks on a smartphone instead.

Discover and watch loads of videos

As mentioned earlier, performance issues don’t affect video watching. On a large PC screen, you can easily navigate through millions of videos and interact with comments, shares, and likes. While loading videos can be troublesome on the PC version, as an added benefit, you get access to a lot of video editing tools for Windows.

While looking for new videos on Tik Tok, you can search by music, hashtags, and users. Since Tik Tok has a 15-second limit, all the videos load pretty quickly. Most videos on Tik Tok have small file sizes, which makes it easier to load and explore content.

Content creation is easier with Tik Tok

With several features, Tik Tok allows you to create videos in a jiffy. It doesn’t take long to get used to the app’s several editing tools. In fact, Tik Tok comes with a mobile studio that can be used to edit recorded videos. However, you should expect slight performance issues on BlueStacks in this area.

The best part about Tik Tok download app is the availability of music from popular artists and celebrities. In fact, Tik Tok was first introduced as Musical.ly, which allowed users to lip-sync with popular soundtracks. Since then, content options have dramatically expanded on the app. Tik Tok keeps introducing contests and challenges to keep users engaged.

Over the years, a wide range of social media apps have been introduced online. Whether you consider WhatsApp, Messenger, or Twitter for your Windows PC, every app needs to stand the test of time.

O Candy Shop do cabelo!
